ESET ! Ransomware in the Public Sector

Cybersecurity is always changing because the threats people face are also changing. ESET is one of them. In the past two years, cybercriminals have started using a more focused approach when it comes to ransomware. Instead of targeting many people with small demands for money, they are now focusing on larger organizations. This shift has put many organizations at risk and has caused a lot of attacks on the public sector.

ESET has provided securities to big companies that have more money and, because a ransomware attack can hurt business operations or even social and economic stability, they have more reason to protect their data.
ESET’s recent report, Ransomware, an enterprise perspective, looks at how this change has affected the public sector. t highlights several recent attacks, like the one that hit the City of Atlanta and others on fire and police servers in Ohio and county agencies in North Carolina.

This doesn’t mean the private sector is less of a target, but more news comes from public entities because these attacks affect public services.
In contrast, the private sector might not always have to share information about security breaches. Ransomware doesn’t care who it attacks, but because it can harm everyday services, it’s important to pay special attention to the public sector’s weaknesses.

Ransomware attacks can have big effects in the public sector, especially because of different challenges.
For example, many public organizations use older systems and have less money to invest in good IT solutions. Also, there might be more rules and slower decision-making when choosing and setting up protective technology. An attack can cause serious financial problems.

When the City of Atlanta refused to pay the ransom after an attack, the costs kept rising, and it could end up costing nearly $17 million.
Five city departments had to work without computers for up to a week, and basic services like online payments for water bills and traffic tickets were impacted. Atlanta is a major economic and transportation hub in the US, and even its airport, one of the busiest, was affected with Wi-Fi being turned off for a week.

These attacks on the public sector have led to major issues, and no one will forget the effects of the WannaCryptor attack last year, which stopped part of the UK’s National Health Service.
Since medical records are worth much more than credit card numbers on the black market, it’s no surprise that attacks target the healthcare industry and other public services. Even on a smaller scale, ransomware attacks have disrupted important services in Ohio, like attacks on fire and police servers in Riverside. These attacks happened in April and May this year and shut down access to the police department’s records management system. At one point, police couldn’t make digital reports and had to use handwritten notes, which was very concerning.

The public sector has to make difficult choices when dealing with cybercrime because of budget limits and other challenges.
They may have to decide between investing in new technology and software or putting money into local schools and hospitals. Public agencies might feel pressure to invest in services that are more visible to the public. However, protecting a city from a cyberattack can be seen as a ‘greater good’ that ensures vital services keep running. While securing networks and data requires time and resources, the cost of a breach is much worse than ever thought. The effect of attacks on the public sector have also led to more serious consequences, and no one will easily forget the effects of last year’s WannaCryptor attack – a ransomware attack that brought part of the UK’s National Health Service to a standstill.
